Canadians- just say no to Keystone XL Pipeline says Tim Fisher Bakken Energy Service co-host Energy Matters Radio Show

Just Say no to Keystone XL Pipeline www.transcanada.com Canadians says Tim Fisher Bakken Energy Service www.bakkenenergyservice.com  co-host Energy Matters Radio Show www.iheart.com.

Why Canadians should fight the Keystone XL pipeline.

In the past I have interviewed decision makers from TransCanada who want to build the Keystone XL pipeline. Their goal is to take Canadian oil and send it to a US refinery in Cushing Oklahoma. The Oil sands in Alberta are oozing with high sulfur oil and they want to charge oil companies for the rights to send their oil down TransCanada’s pipeline.

I stated on last week’s Energy Matters radio show that I felt the building of the Keystone XL pipeline is simply a bad idea as it will take the place of at a minimum 700,000 barrels per day of US harvested crude. Why would we want to do this?

We talk about American Energy Independence but in the same breath we allowed Saudi Arabia to purchase the largest refinery in the USA blocking 800,000 barrels of US produced crude http://www.motivaenterprises.com/motiva-business/port-arthur.html from being refined and now we want to eliminate another 700,000 barrels per day/ Why?

We had a big celebration when North Dakota hit 1 million barrels of oil per day but if we took all the oil produce d in the bakken we would not equal all the American oil we take off the market by allowing so much foreign oil to come into the USA.

Now I understand we still import 7.5 million barrels of oil per day but why would we close off markets to the USA as we produce more. Where I come from that is simply called “STUPID”.

The other issue is the Cushing Refinery is less like a refinery and more like a switching station. Cushing used to have approximately 50 million barrels of inventory on hand but now it has plunged 40% down to 34 million barrels.

The pipeline industry has worked feverishly to reorient the country’s oil pipelines around new sources of domestic crude production in the middle of country. New pipes have been built and old ones reversed to get more crude out of places such as North Dakota and Oklahoma and into refining hubs along the Gulf Coast. That’s essentially the opposite of what they were intended to do, when increasing imports needed to be piped from the coasts to the interior of the country.

Here is the question I do not hear being asked? Why doesn’t Canada build a refinery next to the oil sands? I understand they have one being built that will handle 55,000 barrels but that is so small compared to their needs.

In Canada as of January 12th 2015 they average price per gallon of gas (yes I know they purchase in liters but I did the math conversion 3.78541 liters per gallon) is $3.40 per gallon. In the USA is $2.27. What this tells me if we really care about our friends to the north we would make them keep their oil, suggest they build a refinery thus lowering their national fuel costs. By allowing the oil sands to come to the USA it will actually hurt the average Canadian citizen.

The Providence of Alberta has been fighting to get a refinery built to produce the much needed diesel but their government would much rather have the US expand our refineries than build their own? Why would this be? It is estimated it would cost approximately $12 Billion Canadian Dollars to build a refinery which means thousands of good Canadian jobs.

The bottom line I feel is Canada is practicing the NIMBY principle Not In My Back Yard. Canada feels it is  okay for the USA to handle the product but Canada is too environmentally conscious to have this dirty tar sand refined in their pristine ecosystem.

So here is my summary for Canada. Currently every barrel of oil produced from the oil sands is losing money but because of the private investments of over $271 Billion yes Billion with a B the investors must continue to process the sands or default.

An additional combination $60 billion in new projects have been delayed or cancelled. It is very simply “Follow the Money”. The lobbyist in Washington paid for by the major investment interests in Canada are working overtime to bend the ears of Congress. So far they are 6 for six on the ears   North Dakota Congressmen and one Congresswoman.

I will close with two seldoms:

The first seldom is – Seldom do we hear company names like Suncor Energy Inc. www.suncor.com/ , Total E&P Canada Ltd. www.total-ep-canada.com , and Canadian Oil Sands Ltd.’s www.cdnoilsands.com but these are private companies who are lobbying the US Congress like their financial lives depend on it.

My second seldom is – Seldom do I agree with President Obama on energy policy but when it comes to Keystone XL I do agree it should not be approved. My saving grace is The President states it is environmental I say it is economics.

My solution: let’s build a pipeline from right down  Highway 85 while rebuild 85 into a four lane from Williston right to the SD boarder. At the boarder take a turn west and connect into the Keystone pipeline less the part that would cross into Canada.

  • Since it would start in Montana, Montana could add 50,000 barrels per day, North Dakota could add 400,000 barrels per day and the other 250,000 barrels from Nebraska Niobrara , Wyoming Powder Ridge basin and Colorado’s DJ Basin. This cuts our rail by 50% and keeps US Oil in US pipelines.

And that’s my take.

Bakken Energy Service Member Quantum Energy Announces Berthold as Fourth Site for 21st Century Energy Center

Bakken Energy Service www.BakkenEnergyService.com  Member Quantum Energy www.quantum-e.com Announces Berthold North Dakota as Fourth Site for 21st Century Energy Center

TEMPE, AZ–(Marketwired – Nov 24, 2014) – Quantum Energy, Inc. (OTC PINK: QEGY), announced today that it has signed two separate two year Option Agreements on a combined two hundred sixty five (265) acre site involving multiple landowners in the Berthold, North Dakota area in Ward County, North Dakota for the construction and operation of an Energy Center that will include a 20,000 barrel per day topping plant diesel refinery.

The combined site has been selected near Berthold, ND for Quantum’s latest plans to build a 21st Century Energy Center. Quantum representatives have strategically located the Berthold location to address industry and agriculture needs outside of the Minot area. President Neil Amondson of Quantum says, “Multiple grades of diesel for agriculture and industry are needed in addition to Jet-A fuel to serve nearby airports.” Quantum’s plans include the latest clean technology to capture the CO2 released from their facilities for use in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) throughout the Bakken. Additionally, each facility will also include a natural gas liquids (NGL) stripping capacity of at least 100,000 barrels per day which will build barrel value, provide the potential for local/regional propane production and provide for significantly reduced crude volatility to facilitate enhanced rail tank car safety. “Meeting the much needed local diesel markets for agriculture and industry is a key Quantum goal as well as providing permanent local area high paying jobs through economic development,” Amondson said.

Following the addition of the Stanley, ND site, the Berthold location expands Quantum’s market share interest to serve the current diesel deficiency in the Bakken. “We are committed to serving the needs of agriculture and industry in the Bakken through our strategic alliance with Bilfinger Westcon,” said Amondson.

Quantum www.quantum-e.com  has signed two year Option Agreements in Baker, MT, Fairview, MT, Stanley, ND and now Berthold, ND for Energy Center sites and is making progress in firming up relationships with other strategic alliance partners, refinery design teams, engineering firms, major diesel off-take sources and potential funding sources as well as crude supply candidates as a result of recent meetings in Bismarck, ND, Williston, ND and Oklahoma City.

Quantum Energy, LLC www.quantum-e.com   -  Bakken Energy Service Member www.BakkenEnergyService.com  Secures North Dakota Site for Energy Center In Stanley North Dakota

Stanley, North Dakota Site Under Two Year Option Agreement

TEMPE, AZ–(Marketwired – Nov 3, 2014) – Quantum Energy, Inc.(PINKSHEETS: QEGY) a member of Bakken Energy Service www.bakkenenergyservice.com , announced today that it has signed a two year Option Agreement on a two hundred sixty (260) acre site in the Stanley, North Dakota area in Mountrail County, North Dakota for the construction and operation of an Energy Center that will include a 20,000 barrel per day topping plant diesel refinery.

Quantum President & Director Neil Amondson met with the Mayor of Stanley, ND to share Quantum’s latest recent site plans for a 21st Century Energy Center in Stanley. Quantum representatives have been invited to inform the Stanley City Council at a future Council meeting of the project details destined for the area. Recognizing the additional growth and infrastructure required to meet the demand for utilities and services currently provided by Stanley and Mountrail County www.co.mountrail.nd.us  , Amondson said, “We look forward to working with the Stanley City Council and Mountrail County representatives in bringing diesel fuel and jobs to the area.” Quantum’s design plan includes the latest clean technology to capture the CO2 released from their facilities for use in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) throughout the Bakken. Additionally, each facility will also include a natural gas liquids (NGL) stripping capacity of at least 100,000 barrels per day which will build barrel value, provide the potential for local/regional propane production and provide for significantly reduced crude volatility to facilitate enhanced rail tank car safety. The 20,000 barrel per day diesel refinery will provide 100 plus full time jobs in the Stanley area as well. “Bringing much needed diesel fuel to Stanley www.stanleynd.com  and throughout the Bakken to meet the needs of agriculture and industry is key to the goals of Quantum and its Strategic Alliance partner, Bilfinger Westcon www.bilfinger.com ” Amondson said.

With the addition of the Stanley site, on-going efforts to finalize negotiations on a site in Billings, MT ceased as of October 30, 2014 due to the landowner’s inability to specify in a timely manner which 100 acres of a larger tract would be the Option Property.  “The mechanics of the timing of when the legal description of the 100 acre Option Property was to be broken out of the larger tract became a drafting deal point that was never satisfied by the Landowner,” said Quantum Chairman, Stan Wilson. “Unfortunately, on that point, the landowner could never overcome the logistics and timing required for our permitting process,” Wilson said.

Quantum has signed two year Option Agreements in Baker, MT, Fairview, MT and now Stanley, ND for Energy Center sites and is making progress in firming up relationships with other strategic alliance partners, refinery design teams, engineering firms, major diesel off-take sources and potential funding sources as well as crude supply candidates as a result of recent meetings in Bismarck, ND, Williston, ND and Oklahoma City.

Energy Matters- Tim’s Take November 11, 2014 Tim Fisher- Bakken Energy Service Inc

First of all my sincere thanks to all of those who have served in the armed forces of the United States of America. God Bless you all and Master Sargent William H Fisher my dad… Thank you for serving in Korea and being as good a man out of uniform as you were in.

My goal is to give the residents of the Bakken and anyone next to a rail road a little comfort on the progress of tight oil stabilization or what we refer to as Bakken Oil stabilization. In the same breath I am going to plead with the state of North Dakota www.nd.gov if they truly want to help must make major changes in their tax policies.

I am grateful to Energy Matters www.KFYR.com  AM 50 for first asking me to be a part of the show and then being flexible in allowing me to be on when possible. One of the main reason I continue the program is my hope in bringing more insight to the public into many tough issues the gas and oil industry face.

I am fortunate to get a seat at many tables with many influential industry CEOs, Presidents    and production planners. It is in these meetings I am always reminded that the government has a role to play in the industry but for the most part the government is to collect taxes from the oil and gas companies’ revenue.

And as politicians   talk, the oil and gas companies are already far ahead of them in providing the money and talent needed to make their industry and those they serve a better place.

Too often I feel the state and federal officials think improvements in safety, the environment   , and workers security happen because they talk about it or threaten to mandate it. The truth is actually 180 degrees. The gas and oil companies always want what is best for the environment, their workers and the communities they operate in.

So now, here is my challenge to the state and federal government. If you are truly concerned with flaring and the stabilization of tight oil i.e. Bakken crude then give all the oil and gas companies a tax holiday on any and all gas captured,  stripped and or sold as a bi-product of tight oil. It cost approximately $60 million just to build a 100,000 barrel a day  stabilizing facility not taking into consideration the cost of operations for about $35 million in revenue $3.5 in gross profit and loss at the end of the year.

Here is why:  by the time we pay the 28% tax and gas royalties we lose money! You want us to spend our shareholders money and or our private equity on capturing a gas or stripping a gas that we lose money on. If you are serious then stop the taxing this bi-product and be satisfied with the huge windfall you receive from oil.

I know what the process costs and the bottom line is there is little to no money in it. Add in the dramatic fall in the price of oil and “Houston, we have a problem”

So I asking the North Dakota Industrial commission to work with Senator Rich Warden to call a special session and introduce a bill that will give gas and oil companies a tax holiday on any and all gas collected. Otherwise you may find 700,000 less barrels    of oil leaving ND each day because of a lack of stabilization.

And that is my take.   www.bakkenenergyservice.com

Gasification Process

Gasification process flowchart

Step-by-step

Gasifying coal involves dismantling its molecular structure (by combustion) and reassembling the resulting hydrogen and carbon as methane gas (methanation), which is then sent to a pipeline. The heart of the Synfuels Plant is its 14 gasifiers. These gasifiers are cylindrical pressure vessels, 40 feet high with an inside diameter of 13 feet.

  • Each day 18,000 tons of lignite are fed into the top of the gasifiers.
  • Steam and oxygen are injected into the bottom of the coal beds causing intense combustion: 2,200 degrees F.
  • The hot gases break down the molecular bonds of coal and steam, releasing compounds of carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen and other substances to form a raw gas that exits the gasifiers.
  • The raw gas is cooled.
  • Tar, oils, phenols, ammonia and water coproducts are condensed from the gas stream and purified and sent on.
The gas moves to a cleaning area where further impurities are removed.
  • Methanation occurs when the cleaned gas passes over a nickel catalyst causing carbon monoxide and the remaining carbon dioxide to react with free hydrogen to form methane.
  • Carbon dioxide is removed.
  • The gas is then cooled, dried, and compressed, and enters the pipeline with a heating value of 975 Btu per cubic foot.

Is DOJ probe into Halliburton and Baker Hughes in antitrust investigation unjustified?

Is the Department Of Justice www.justice.org probe into Halliburton www.hallibuton.com and Baker Hughes www.bakerhughes.com in an antitrust probe unjustified?

The definition of ANTITRUST is : Opposing or intended to regulate business monopolies, such as trusts or cartels, especially in the interest of promoting competition: antitrust legislation.

This means those being looked into may have the ability to monopolize a business sector. This particular case, the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division is probing “The hydraulic fracturing with the DOJ looking into the possibility of anticompetitive practices involving pressure pumping performed on oil and gas wells.”

Here is why this probe will fall on flat on its face and/or will fade away quickly. Halliburton on holds approximatly 18% share of the “practices involving pressure pumping performed on oil and gas wells”. Add to this Baker Hughes at approximate 12% and a total of 30% share does not even come close to meeting the minimum threshold of an antitrust suit.

What appears just as odd is the company holding the two ranking in “practices involving pressure pumping performed on oil and gas wells” Schlumberger www.schlumberger.com is apparently not involved in the probe given it was not to my knowledge mentioned in their 10Q report. Schlumberger has an approximate 13% share in the “practices involving pressure pumping performed on oil and gas wells”.

So let us total the top three approximate percent share of market; Halliburton at 18%, Schlumberger at 13% and Baker Hughes at 12% for a grand total share of market of 43%. Yes, only 43%. So, even taking the top three players will not breach a 51% share. To break the minimum barrier we must add the fourth position held by either Weatherford www.weatherford.com or Frac Tech www.fractech.com both with an estimated 10% share.

Summary, if it takes four of the largest companies to reach the 51% is there any chance that number 1 Halliburton and number 3 Baker Hughes have a monopoly?

So why the probe? It appears there are two possible reasons- First, the DOJ was not aware that the second largest company Schlumberger which has “practices involving pressure pumping performed on oil and gas wells ” actually exists or they are targeting high profile companies to please their green, anti-fracturing base. In either case it is about to get very embarrassing for the DOJ.

I have two suggestions: 1) DOJ drop your unwarned probe 2) Schlumberger, stay out of the crosshairs.

Dakotah LLC low profile 946 barrel steel tanks on Fort Berthold site. Designed to blend into the beautiful environment at only 12 feet high.

In early 2012, Dacotah, LLC’s parent company, Micada  www.micada.com , was approached to design and fabricate a  for installation on the exploration and production pads on the Fort Berthold Reservation. The primary concern was the extreme visibility of conventional storage tanks, which although very common, are not easy to conceal and according to some of the end users detracted from the wild landscape.

In February, Dacotah, LLC  introduced its’ low profile tank capable of storing 967 barrels of Bakken crude oil or 40,600 gallons of production water. With an overall height of less than thirteen feet, the tank or tank battery is easily concealed behind any low ridge or berm.

By mid-June the first eight tank battery was installed on the Ft. Berthold Reservation at Independence Point on the shores of Lake Sacajawea.

In keeping with the custom fabrication tradition of Micada, all Dacotah tanks are hand-built using either US or Canadian steel in accordance with standards set forth in API Standard www.api.org/standards 650 11th Edition handbook. All the tanks are fabricated in a climate controlled environment by AWS and Canadian Board certified welders. The precision rolled side walls, pitched roof and floor are formed from ¼” HR plate and welded inside and out then vacuum and pressure tested to guard against leakage.

As a final step, all interior seams are hand finished to “near white metal” then coated with an acid and  solvent resistant sealant against long-term leakage. This sealant is crack resistant has been tested against breakage. It has been bent to a 12 inch radius before cracking appeared. The exterior of all tanks are cleaned, epoxy primed and top coated.

Dakotah LLC a member of Bakken Energy Service produces world class, steel low profile tanks in North Dakota . These engineered tanks hold 946 barrels of oil and at only 12 feet high greatly are much safer to climb, inspect and maintain.
